Fans of french arcade puzzlers can lob their berets skyward in celebration – the cult colour-swapping favourite Skweek is back! Freshuu, publisher of the awesome space shooter ZiGGURAT, is releasing a modernised version of the game onto iOS.
Skweek was originally released on the Atari ST in 1989 but then ported to just about every home format around at the time before prompting a similarly well-travelled sequel (Super Skweek!). The game requires you to traverse a series of tiled stages, moving over blue squares to turn them pink, while collecting power-ups and avoiding enemy monsters. It was essentially a fiendishly compelling casual smartphone title accidentally written twenty years too early.
Currently being developed in conjunction with original creators Laurent Arditi and Stéphane Ducasse, the iPhone/iPad translation will feature touchscreen controls, using swipe motions to move the character and tap to fire.
The game is apparently out soon, but for now, there is a Twitter feed and a Facebook page.
Bienvenue de retour, vous belle boule de fourrure!
