Dear Esther, an experimental ghost story originally released in 2008, is set for re-release on Steam this coming Valentine’s Day.

For this remake the developer, independent studio thechineseroom, has worked with former DICE environment artist Robert Briscoe to completely overhaul the haunting Hebridean island environments, resulting in some of the most detailed and expressive scenes we’ve seen in a contemporary video game.

A trailer released today shows off not only these beautiful scenes, but also the melancholic orchestral soundtrack (scored by Jessica Curry), and the austere, gravelly voice-over of Nigel Carrington. It’s quite the thing.
