Could it be that the Hookshot Podcast has reached number 49 already? No, alas. I just fired up the CMS without my glasses on, and that hash sign confused me.

What a lark! Or rather, what a laugh – and that’s the subject of this week’s podcast. Pulling back the curtain a little, I think I can probably safely admit that we recorded this podcast a while back – it’s all Will’s fault – and I’ve completely forgotten the ground we cover. We’re talking about funny videogames, though, so I suspect Monkey Island and WarioWare feature prominently, and I bet I mention Robotron and then Keith tries to pitch a game of some sort. Then Parkin says something that has to be edited out.

Goodness! Is it 2013 already? We can almost feel the vestiges of youth hardening as we glance at the calendar.

But! This is no time to be glum and mortal. Video games are coming. Lots of video games. Also, new hardware and peripherals and so many announcements and trends and winners and losers and business models and art styles and new ideas and old ideas and weird ideas and invention and reinvention and it’s all coming, coming, coming on the closing horizon.

This year the Hookshot Inc. team will be focusing more fully on our podcast output (hence the rather sparse updates lately) – but don’t worry: we’ve not disappeared, we’ve just slipped from the visual to the aural. There will be the odd post here and there too, but principally we’ll be talking about games, rather than writing about them (something each of us continues to do a great deal elsewhere) on this particular corner of the internet.

In this week’s episode we’re laying down our predictions for the year. Handsome Keith Stuart guides the team through some of his ideas of what to expect in 2013, and the rest of the team pull them apart. Can we expect indie horror to enjoy an upsurge this year? There are seven more sleeps till Christmas! Which means it’s nearly time for PRESENTS to be PRESSED into your hands. Which provides us with a tiresome and tenuous link to the subject of this week’s Hookshot Inc. podcast, in which the team discusses the act of pressing things in video games.

Are the virtual joysticks of planet smartphone acceptable replacements for a physical controller? Are there any motion controlled games which can equal the curious thrill of seeing a game character wave back at you on screen? Which is the Hookshot team’s favourite button? We press ourselves against these questions and more in the sixth (6th!) episode in the Hookshot Inc. podcast season one.

This week the Hookshot Inc. team turns up to the studio in black clothes and with ashen faces to discuss that most morbid of subjects: death (in video games).

But wait! Is death in games such a big deal? Surely there’s always another life to replace the lost one, another credit to be pulled fro the depths of your pocket? Mario may fall off a cliff in 2-1, but he’ll be back for 2-2 with a stab of the button, no?

What of permadeath – the act of playing a game as if your virtual life has the same expectancy as your actual one: die and it’s all over. And what about the distinction between narrative death in games and ludic death? Can the two ever work in harmony?

More importantly, do you know which pop band Keith Stuart of The Guardian names his X-Com soldier after?

Settle down with a stiff drink and a reflective soul as we stare the end full in the face and come away invigorated. Possibly.

Hookshot Inc. is a lover not a fighter, as anyone who has spent the evening drinking with Keith Stuart can testify. But we do love a good scrap in video games, from duking it out with professional footballer Rio Ferdinand in Street Fighter to taking down children at Tetris.

So this week the Hookshot Inc. crew give fighting in games a right good seeing to.

Video games are good at destruction. You want destruction? Almost every video game leaves a trail of rubble and destruction in its wake. But what about the more constructive side to our virtual toil? What about the games that allow us to express our creative side, to build?

In this, the third Hookshot Inc. podcast Will, Simon, Keith and Christian attempt to construct 20 minutes of interesting discussion about games that allow us to build. From Minecraft (duh) to Sim City to Little Big Planet we think about things to make and do.

Twitch! That is the subject of this, Hookshot Inc.’s second podcast in Season One.

Season One! To be honest, none of us know whether there will ever be a Season Two, or even how long a ‘Season’ actually lasts for in podcast world. Is it a month? A year? Who knows!

Regardless, referring to this as a ‘Season’ of podcasts makes us sound a bit like The West Wing, so that’s all good by us. Speaking of The West Wing, I wonder which Hookshot Inc. team member is which character?

Handsome Keith Stuart is a shoo-in for Sam Seaborne, while Will Porter would make for an excellent CJ, providing he was wearing super high heels. Meanwhile Parkin has the air of Joshua Lyman about him which means, naturally enough, Donlan is lovely Bartlet. He’s always saying things like ‘What’s next?’ around the Hookshot Oval office when he finishes an iOS review.

Er, Twitch! That is the subject of this, Hookshot Inc.’s second podcast in Season One.

We discuss Super Hexagon, Geoemetry Wars, Robotron and many other games we feel embody the spirit of twitching. Listen below, download using the link provided or subscribe to us on iTunes here.

Hookshot Podcast #1: FUN http://www.hookshotinc.com/hookshot-podcast-1-fun/ http://www.hookshotinc.com/hookshot-podcast-1-fun/#comments Mon, 08 Oct 2012 11:00:22 +0000 http://www.hookshotinc.com/?p=6160 In Hookshot Inc's inaugural podcast episode Chris, Keith, Simon and Will tackle the word 'FUN'.

As the nights draw in and the cold issues its solemn daily reminders of humankind’s mortal fragility, what better way to bring a little warmth to existence than with 20 minutes of four gentle white boys excitedly talking about downloadable video games?

Yes, that’s right: Hookshot Inc. now has a podcast and this, dear reader/ listener, is the only place where you can devour the first episode.

If you’re feeling a little cold-ridden/ wobbly-hearted, then there are few remedies more potent than a dose of Christian Donlan identifying Baudelaire’s favourite iOS game. No, really.

The premise is simple, yet we’re not going to let that stop us making it sound way more complicated than it need be.

Each episode we choose a single word theme to base the show (show? too Broadway?) around – similar to how WarioWare themes each microgame around a single command. Over the next few months we’ll be looking at concepts such a ‘Build’ and ‘Twitch’ but, for this inaugural issue we thought we’d take a look at the biggest little word there is: Fun.

Is fun the ultimate point of every video game? WTF is fun anyway? The challenge or the mastery? The carrot or the stick? The fox or the hound? The crying or the pleasuring?

Does a game have to be fun to be worthwhile? Who would win in an ideological battle between David Cage and Shigeru Miyamoto? The Hookshot Inc. team examines these questions (one of them, at least) and more in Episode One.

Take a listen using the special player below these very words and, all being well, we’ll get accepted to iTunes and you can subscribe or something. Alternatively, we can forget about the whole sorry thing and, as with most of our feature ideas, let it die in a quiet corner and hope nobody notices the smell.

Onwards!
