My main immersion into music videos has generally come when slumped in front of MTV2 at inadvisable hours in the morning. I don’t even know if MTV2 exists still. I’m that old.
Let’s not divert back to the time when my soggy brain did wet backflips at the sight of the Papa Roach bassist flinging his guitar around his neck in a full 360 degrees though. Let’s talk Exo – a downloadable music video that you can see, hear and wander around inside.
Exo has been released for free by New York electronic outfit Gatekeeper, and it’s something of a blend of Proteus and the bits at the start of Half-Life that randomly teleported you to Xen and back at Valve’s whim.
It’s hardly the newest concept in the world, but it really is something special. I’m not saying ‘Hey! Take something mind-altering before you play!’, because as far as I’m aware that’s not something Hookshot Inc should be seen to promote. What I will say, however, is that necking half a bottle of Calpol and doing a handstand for a while before you play will almost certainly help you in your journey into sound.
I’m also deliberately not going to link the YouTube walkthrough, as to be honest that’ll just spoil it for you. Just give it a whirl, and trust me on this one.
You can discover the aural delights of Exo with a relatively colossal download from here.
