Hockey? delivers the sport of Wayne Gretsky – and kings, probably – in all its slippery, face-planting awkwardness. The game, which I’m compelled to admit I read about in this month’s issue of PC Gamer, has swiftly reached the point where it’s pretty much my favourite sports title of all time, in fact. Not that it was a long list, mind.
Hockey?‘s big idea is delivering the sport in first-person, while encouraging you to use your mouse movements alone to aim and knock the puck around. It makes for matches that play out as elaborate avante garde comedies, and scores that rarely inch past 3s or 4s.
The team behind Hockey? has also made Golf? incidentally, but I haven’t tried that out yet – partly because it’s not as much of a fantasy sport for me as hockey, and partly because I can’t yet get over Hockey?‘s body-checking animation.
