Some puzzle games are so fiendishly simple, you just think, oh lord, why didn’t I think about that? We’ve all done it with Tetris, right? Why didn’t we think of that? What’s WRONG with us? It’s just shapes falling down the screen. Just shapes…

HueBrix is just a collection of colour squares inside a grid. Your aim is to fill the whole space by creating paths with the colours, but then each colour can only extend a certain distance (the number of moves available is shown on the starting square) so you have to work out how to twist them around each other to fill the grid. Later, there are obstacles to contend with, and things get very complicated. The initial $2.99 purchase gets you 100 levels but an incredible 300 more can be downloaded. There’s also a level editor.

Cleverly, HueBrix ticks lots of the key puzzle game boxes – it’s easy to comprehend, can exist on a single screen and feeds into our desire to tidy things up. Created by Mumbai-based team Yellow Monkey, this is a really neat title. If you can stop yourself thinking ‘why didn’t I think of this’, you’re going to enjoy it. Catch it on iOS and Android on August 15.
