I’ve been promising developers Laughing Jackal that I’d take their Hungry Giraffe for a spin ever since the dawn of Hookshot Inc. “Play our game!” they said, “S’got a giraffe in it!”. I was like all: “Giraffe! Awesome!”, yet never fed that poor, starving even-toed ungulate mammal.

It’s with relief then, that as it launches on Playstation Mobile and continues to sit upon the PlayStation Network as a Mini, to discover that it’s all rather fun.

It’s an eternal climber, mixed in with several shades of Snake. The more fruit you eat the more your neck extends, but run out of unlikely giraffe snacks and you’ll start to fall back into what remains unharvested. The scene will become a criss-cross of black on yellow patchwork throat, as you desperately try to latch on to enough sandwiches to give you the momentum to surge back up through the level.

Up in the sky traditional savannah predators like anvils, dumbbells and screen-warping drugs lie in wait for your hapless giraffe, but skilful sideways and diagonal negociation can help you avoid their taint. It’s all silly, throwaway fun that gives giraffes a much needed leg-up in the realm of gaming. Sure, zoologists claim that Giraffes don’t usually eat hamburgers, but what do they know? Tree-hugging idiots, the lot of them.

Hungry Giraffe is available for £2.39 through the PlayStation Mobile tab on PlayStation Store for PS Vita and through PlayStation Certified devices.
