Early Hookshot Inc. adopters may remember our story on Kumo Lumo, an iOS game project that a team of programmers and artists from Blitz Games (at the time unknown) began working on without the knowledge of their superiors.
It was something of a risky business, talking to the press about a game that their employers weren’t aware of. But the gamble paid off as, following the article, the team secured a publishing deal with Chillingo.
Yup, Hookshot Inc. is basically the Cilla Black of the indie/ publisher matchmaking world. Little known fact: it was basically us who introduced Notch to his millions. Anyway, Kumo Lumo! Looking forward to our MASSIVE INTRODUCTION FEE, GUYS.
Kumo Lumo is a game in which you assume the role of a cloud, peeing on good things to make the grow and peeing on bad things to make them diminish. Run out of pee and it’s game over. The game’s launch trailer (below) reveals a smart, funny and good-looking game, elevated by its sticker bomb-style art and charming direction.
Of course, Blitz is just the latest in a long, winding line of traditional game studios who are dipping their toes in the iOS market. The studio’s CEO, Philip Oliver said: “It’s clear that the future of gaming lies in embracing a wider variety of inter-connected platforms; our move into the mobile space is part of a strategy to enable that. Many large developers have been unable to find their way successfully into the mobile market but we’re confident that we’ve created an approach that capitalises on our console experience whilst bringing the agility and flexibility required to develop smaller scale titles into the mix.”
So Kumo Lumo is a cloud experiment not only for its six man development team (who created the game while researching the download game market) but also for the studio, testing the ever murky waters of the App Store. Best of luck to the team and you can find out when the game goes live by visiting its official blog here.
We’ll see if we can check in with them following the game’s release to find out how it all went.
