Good news for fans of punishing platform adventures and lead characters shaped like cubes of beef: Super Meat Boy is coming to iOS and Android devices! In what they’ve cheekily termed a ‘meta-April Fools prank’, creators Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes announced the project on April 1 – then spent the day on Twitter re-assuring everyone it wasn’t a joke. Even our old pal Notch was confused.
Anyway, it is happening, it really is. On the Team Meat blog, the duo have promised that Super Meat Boy: The Game will absolutely not be, “a shitty port of an existing game with non tactile buttons spread all over the screen blocking the players view and making for frustrating controls.”
Instead, the chaps are rebuilding the game from the (pork) belly up with touch controls in mind. It’s a new game, essentially, with new graphics, new sound and new objectives.
Okay, so is this good news for the fans? Super Meat Boy is, of course, a super anal nightmare zone (wow, that sounds unpleasant) of pixel-perfect jumps and precision obstacle avoidance – what will be left of the game if that dynamic is removed? A cute cube of meat?
Well, development has just begun, but we’re certainly intrigued. There are other ways for touch-based platformers to be challenging, without having to mimic the exactness of digital controls. And, look, that’s definitely a buzz saw in that screenshot, right? That shit ain’t going anywhere.
