The only thing missing is the bit at the end where Penny and Brain tell you how to cross roads.

Today’s Tie-in Tuesday was due to a short treatise on The Simpsons: Tapped Out but, seeing as its popularity has caused EA servers to meltdown and the offending article to be removed from the App Store, instead we’re going with a franchise with a similar amount of clout. That’s right kids: Inspector Gadget.

‘Go, go gadget iOS device!’. In another life I’d have happily spent 59p on something that played the Inspector Gadget theme tune ad infinitum, as indeed this does. This being a serious site for gaming aesthetes, however, perhaps we ought to have a chat about the actual game.

We’re talking proper old-school Inspector Gadget here, none of that Matthew Broderick shit. Penny has been kidnapped by The Claw, our hero is rollerskating from left to right, and good old dependable Brain has to pull a Lakitu act and fish him out of trouble when he takes a tumble. It’s down to you to tap the screen whenever the Inspector needs to leap between buildings or over banana skins, while there are also cranes to be swung from and trains to be leapt over.

It’s a Canabalt, then, basically – albeit one with an umbrella that sprouts from the lead character’s head to help him deal with fans that have fiendishly been laid in his path. An entertaining rooftop outing, then, but also a fiendishly difficult one. One might even say too difficult. If you manage to get past the first level then you win the very first of our imaginary range of Hookshot Inc gold medals.
