Through the Trials Evolution wonder-editor the talented chaps at RedLynx have created a level that recreates Limbo (vast spider and all) along with a gameplay mode that evokes the directional man-hurls of ‘Splosion Man. How did all that come about? On a recent visit to Trials HQ Hookshot Inc prodded Creative Director Antti Ilvessuo until he told us.

“We had the 1 Bit Trip level in Trials HD, and that was a lot like a 2D game.” explains the be-hatted Finn. “At some point we had some discussions – seeing as Limbo was pretty close to it we decided to get as close to it as possible. We know the Playdead guys, so we sent it to them to see if they liked it. They said ‘Hey! That’s really cool! Let’s make it!”’

A boy and his bike: in Hell. Well, near Hell anyway.

The process that saw a riff on ‘Splosion Man entering proceedings came about in a similarly organic way, though Antii also underlines the bond between the three studios that came about through all their games being sold in a retail indie bundle.

“We played around with moving the dude around with explosions, we had an idea we could do it.” continues Ilvessuo. “We knew that Splosion Man was pretty close to what we had there – so we tested it, and it worked. I got in touch with the Twisted Pixel guys, told them what we were doing and they were “Hey! Let’s do it!”.

Splosion Man. Splosion Man. Does whatever a motorbike can.

So if you see the kid from Limbo riding a bike through the wilderness in Playdead’s next offering, you’ll presumably know why…
