I know which traditionally themed strategic role-playing game I’ll be downloading today. It will be Rainbow Moon, the latest project from eastasiasoft, the Hong Kong studio previously responsible for gorgeous shooter series, Söldner-X. Following exiled adventurer Baldren, who finds himself spirited to the titular planet by an arch rival, this is an ambitious adventure boasting a vast isometric landscape and over 20 hours of nostalgic grid-based combat and exploration.
Quickly have a look at the video here, it’s rather lovely:
Being a sad old fool, it’s a rather exciting little title to me, heavily reminiscent of the Saturn and PSone era RPGs I loved playing when I had time to aimlessly explore dungeons, and when random monster encounters were a welcome chance to gain more XP rather than an infuriating barrier to making progress before putting the kids to bed. You can see the DNA of Final Fantasy Tactics and maybe Vandal Hearts and Grandia in here (even the font in the game’s logo is reminiscent of the era) as well as Dragon Quest and Disgea – all brought into luscious 60 fps modernity.
It’s out today for a tenner on PlayStation Network.
