Wonderputt is eighteen holes of magic, now released for paid finger-taps rather than the free clicks in browsers of old. It’s a beautiful game – and one liable to hypnotise the businessman sitting next on the train as you dally with rocketry, henges and submarines trapped in ice.
Yes, for 69p there’s certainly less golfing action here than in rival stick-to-ball games. In more perfunctory ‘pull back finger for strength and directional ball-thwack arrow’ games, however, you don’t get Aztec skulls, hungry frogs and Escher-esque design work.
Nor do you get the exquisite noises that Wonderputt makes – its taps, rolls and ball collision sounds heal body and soul. The music, meanwhile, complements the on-screen meteor strikes and grazing cattle with even more new-age wonder than one of those shops that smells of incense and inflates the price-point of crystals.
The game is perfectly suited for iPad – strange to say, but everything just feels the right size for such a dreamy pulled-back game. Give it a putt, see what you think.
You can buy Wonderputt for iPad on the App Store. Alternatively you can play Wonderputt for free in THIS browser right now by clicking on these magic words. There is no better way to celebrate the onset of the Ryder Cup.
