Zombie Gunship is the game where Call of Duty and Zombies collide, yet it isn’t Call of Duty Zombies. “So what is it?”, as Cat would ask in the fourth episode of series four of Red Dwarf.

What we’re dealing with here is a riff on the AC130 missions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – mixed in with a spot of zombie-based Tower Defence.

You view the scene in monochrome, in a plane high up above a series of valleys or fields that lead to a human stronghold. Zombies show up as shambling silhouettes, bereft of body-heat, while sprinting human survivors are white – all trying to make their way to a nearby human stronghold.

As the AC-130 gunner high up in the clouds above you must mow down the shambling horde before they start knocking at the human base’s door, while simultaneously protecting the survivors moving in amongst them – and stopping them from occasionally getting chewed upon. It’s no small demand, either, since you can only fire when you’re zoomed in up-close – half the battle is in keeping tabs on how close the zombies are getting on the other side of the map.

As the number of zombies ramp up, so do your bought armaments and upgrades – granting you a machine gun, rocket launcher and the might of the Megabomb. It’s a little more cartoon than the po-faced approach of Call of Duty, but neatly slots a decent game into the garb of a showboat shooter level. It’s also somewhat eerie staring down into your phone to see something that’s quite so bleak and serious, before blind-firing from a distance to send the dead back down to hell…
